Optical Transmitters
Types of Modulation. Figure 7.1 illustrates two alternative ways to generate a modulated optical signal. In Fig. 7.1 (a), the laser is turned on and off by modulating its current; this method is known as direct modulation. In Fig. 7.l(b), the laser is on at all times, a so-called continuous wave (CW) laser, and the light beam is modulated with a kind of optoelectronic shutter, a so-called modul...
متن کاملIntegrated optical driver for interferometric optical gyroscopes.
We present the first chip-scale "integrated optical driver" (IOD) that can interrogate with a sensing coil to realize an interferometric optical gyroscope. The chip comprises a light source, three photodiodes, two phase modulators and two 3-dB couplers within an area of 4.5 mm2. This allows for a significant reduction in size, weight, power consumption and cost of optical gyroscopes.
متن کاملSampled-Grating DBR Laser-Based Analog Optical Transmitters
Sampled-grating distributed Bragg grating (SGDBR) laser-based widely tunable optical transmitters are investigated for application in high-performance analog links. More than 45 nm tuning range, 40 dB sidemode suppression ratio, and peak relative intensity noise below 153 dB/Hz is measured. SGDBR lasers integrated with semiconductor optical amplifiers and electroabsorption modulators (EAMs) are...
متن کاملWavelength Agile, Integrated Optical Transmitters for Analog Applications
A summary of current work involving the development of high performance, wavelength-tunable integrated optical transmitters for analog applications is given. The performance of sampled-grating DBR lasers integrated with an SOA and an electroabsorption or Mach-Zehnder modulator is evaluated in terms of E/O conversion efficiency, noise performance and dynamic range. Optimization options to maximi...
متن کاملOptical Flow in Driver Assistance Systems
Motion perception is one of the most important attributes of the human brain. Visual motion perception consists in inferring speed and direction of elements in a scene based on visual inputs. Analogously, computer vision is assisted by motion cues in the scene. Motion detection in computer vision is useful in solving problems such as segmentation, depth from motion, structure from motion, compr...
